About the Artisan

Hello, my name is Karen. I was born in MA many years ago! When I was 8 years old I moved to Maine. My mother who loved the sea, bought an island in Portland Harbor to keep a Civil War Era war from being torn down. There, I was introduced to island life and the joys of finding treasures from the sea.

I remember staking claim to a collection of boards that had once been a rowboat. As I attempted to Captain it to the dock it sank. To this day, I blame my brother for the loss of my first command. It was not that I rowed too slow, he did not bail fast enough. Gathering shells and "Sea Jewels" (sea glass) was a natural way of life for an Island Girl.

After a sabbatical from Maine that included a marriage, a move to Florida's sea coast, two children and a divorce, I came home. I rejoined the family island business, earned my Captain's License and started gathering sea treasures. I took a stained-glass class at the Farnsworth Art Museum and set out to develop an art form that is mine - incorporating stained glass and my sea treasures.

My greatest job after my children, island and the sea, is to sell a piece of art to someone who does not know how I created it and to listen to them express their excitement with their purchase.

My art can be found at many galleries and art co-ops along Maine's beautiful mid-coast.
